osu! skins in lazer

Short answer: stable skins work in lazer, but only during gameplay. The osu! wiki grades lazer's skin support as Partial, footnoted "Gameplay only" — your hit circles, sliders, cursor and hitsounds are used while you play; song select and the results screen are still lazer's own. ppy have said they will "do our best to bring back as much of this as we can", and that menu cursor support "will likely" return.

Installing a .osk

Identical on both clients, and it is the reason every skin here is distributed as a .osk: open the file, or drag it onto the running game. The client imports it and selects it for you. On stable, a skin that came as a .zip or .7z instead has to be extracted into the Skins folder, after which Ctrl + Alt + Shift + S makes it appear without a restart.

Where lazer keeps skins — and why you cannot find the folder

This is the question behind most "where are my osu! skins" searches from lazer users, and the answer is that lazer has no Skins folder at all. Its file store lives at:

OSPath
Windows%appdata%/osu
Linux~/.local/share/osu
macOS~/Library/Application Support/osu
AndroidAndroid/data/sh.ppy.osulazer/files

Inside it, every imported file is stored under its own SHA-256 hash — files/1/1a/1a47929b… — with a database mapping names to hashes. There is nothing browsable, and that is deliberate: it deduplicates identical files and stops anything outside the game from tampering with them. The wiki is explicit that the supported way to change a skin by hand is to export it, edit it, and import it again. Desktop builds can move the whole store with Change folder location… in settings.

Moving from stable to lazer

Beatmaps, skins, scores, replays and collections all import. Settings do not — the wiki says you will need to set those up from scratch. If both installs are on one drive, the migration uses hard links, so importing does not consume the space twice even though Explorer will report that it does.

Skins that suit lazer

Lazer renders at your display's real resolution, so a skin drawn at @2x stays sharp where a 1x one goes soft. 429 of the archives we have opened ship HD elements. Sorted by how often they were actually used:
